Happy December, folks!
Festive season fast approaches, and we here at Festival Folk are still hard at work providing top notch wedding entertainment and awesome corporate entertainment to Christmas parties right across the country.
In between being one of the biggest wedding bands in Kent, our guitarist Jim somehow finds the time to be one of the UK’s most respected and sought-after session musicians – performing on records for a number of different artists. His most recent release sees him feature on Robbie Williams’ brand new Christmas album – The Christmas Present.
Well the record itself went to number 1 in the UK charts this week! We thought we’d celebrate by catching up with Jim about his time working on the record (he even sent us a few behind-the-scenes shots from the studio – a Festival Folk exclusive!).
How did you get involved with this awesome opportunity to work with Robbie Williams?
‘I’ve been working with Robbie for a few years now. I was lucky enough to feature in some capacaity on Robbie Williams’ last few albums, and so I was super excited to be asked back again earlier this year to play on his current album, The Christmas Present!’
Amazing! What can you tell us about the recording process?
‘I recorded and played on 11 songs of the 28 song album at Guy Chambers’ studio in Ladbroke Grove, Sleeper Sounds, which is home to nearly every instrument under the sun – grand pianos, synths formally owned my Pink Floyd and a huuuuuuuge vintage guitar collection that I dream about daily. I recorded and wrote my guitar parts with Guy over a couple of months at his studio playing a 12 string, acoustics, electrics, a baritone and bass.’
‘One track on The Christmas Present features Tyson Fury. I never expected to be playing on a track featuring the heavyweight boxing champion of the world and perhaps he never expected to be singing on a Christmas song with Robbie Williams either!’
Crazy! What are some other highlights from the record for you?
‘One of my favourites on the album is the wonderful cover of I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake. Robbie, Guy and myself recorded it live. No mistakes allowed! There’s something about recording live that captures something extra in the moment. Robbie was tons of fun in the studio and always cracking jokes and made the whole ‘recording live’ process relaxed.’
What an amazing opportunity. You must be buzzing!
‘It’s been a great experience recording this album and it was a real honour to be recording among some fantastic musicians and songwriters. I’m super proud to have played on (at the time of writing!) a UK number 1 album. That’s a pretty cool Christmas Present!’
So there you have it! Be sure to check out Jim’s work on Robbie’s new record…or you can hear him in person by booking us for your big event! You can get in touch via our lovely office team at Tailored Entertainment. We can’t wait to hear from you.
Happy Christmas. FF xx
